The growth predicted in augmented and virtual reality is staggering — it's projected to increase by ten times over the next five years. The educational sector plays a large part in this growth, as universities start to harness the potential of immersive technologies for new modes of learning.

 

Augmented and virtual reality will see massive growth in the next five years, driven in large part by both K–12 and post-secondary?education.

According to a new forecast from market research firm IDC, AR and VR will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 78.3 percent for the next five years to reach nearly 10 times the scale it's expected to hit this year — from $16.8 billion in 2019 to $160 billion in 2023.

According to IDC, two of the top five use cases for growth are in the education sector:

  • Lab and field work in higher education, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of 183.4 percent over the forecast period; and
  • Lab and field work in K–12, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of 146.3 percent.
  • The United States will not lead in either spending or growth. China will spend the most on AR and VR technology during the forecast period. The United States will come in second. The two combined will account for about three-quarters of the world’s spending on this technology category.

The fastest growth will be seen in Western Europe, followed by the United States and China.

According to IDC: “Hardware will account for more than half of all AR/VR spending throughout the forecast, followed by software and services. Strong spending growth (189.2 percent CAGR) for AR viewers will make this the largest hardware category by the end of the forecast, followed by VR host devices. AR software will be the second fastest growing category, enabling it to overtake VR software spending by 2022. Services spending will be driven by strong growth from AR consulting services, AR custom application development, and AR systems integration.”

It wouldn't be enough to use hardware from non-Chinese companies.

The US isn't just skittish about American companies using equipment from Chinese companies?in their 5G networks?-- it might force companies to avoid Chinese involvement altogether.?Wall Street Journal?sources?claim that the Trump administration is considering a requirement that 5G cellular gear for the US must be designed and made outside of China. To that end, officials are reportedly asking telecom firms if they can produce US-oriented equipment elsewhere.

The talks are in "early and informal" phases, the tipsters said. However, the executive order that dictated a review of the telecom supply chain is asking for proposed rules by an October deadline -- there isn't much time for things to change, even if any rules wouldn't take effect for a while.

The White House has declined to comment.

Whether or not there's any justification for such a cautious approach, the rationale would be clear. There have been fears that the Chinese government might ask factories and suppliers to insert surveillance code and backdoors into American networking hardware, giving it a chance to spy on American infrastructure, government bodies and individuals. There's no known evidence this is happening so far, but some aren't willing to take chances -- companies like Super Micro have?moved production outside of China?precisely to reassure wary customers.

If a requirement like this did go ahead, it would add to the pressure for telecom hardware makers. Ericsson and Nokia are already moving production outside of China to?avoid US tariffs, but now they wouldn't have much choice -- they'd either have to shift production or completely rule out US sales.

Security vulnerabilities found in three quarters of mobile apps

The report, first highlighted by?ZDNet, lays out the security issues identified in many apps found on both the Google Play store and the iOS App Store. The insecure storage of data from apps could lead to information like passwords, financial details, personal data, and communications being accessible by hackers.

In addition to insecure data storage, which was the most commonly identified security issue, vulnerabilities classified as “high risk” were identified in 38% of iOS apps and 43% of Android apps. The report did not single out particular apps which were security threats, but rather identified trends throughout app design which could lead to security issues.

A particular concern raised by the report is that apps do not only work on the client side (i.e. on the user’s phone). They also often transmit data to a server which is hosted by the developer. While modern phone operating systems have some security mechanisms in place to prevent inappropriate access to data, there are often no such protections in place for data stored on the developer’s server or moving between the phone and the server. This means that vulnerabilities are just as common on the server side as on the client side.

The report includes recommendations for developers on how to create apps with better security, but what about for users? Firstly, users should pay attention to what access apps request when they are first installed. Look at what permissions an app is asking for and consider whether it is reasonable for the app’s function. If it is not, don’t install the app. Also, the report advises against rooting or jailbreaking your device as this disables some of the operating system’s built-in security features.

Other recommended regular security practices include using a properly randomized password or pin (not your birthday) and being careful what links you click on. You should also update your OS and your apps regularly, avoid?third-party app stores, and not plug your phone into unknown PCs or charging stations.

And finally, lest you think that one operating system is better than another in terms of app security, the report warns against this. Although there were slightly more vulnerabilities found in Android than iOS apps, the report states that “this difference is not significant, and the overall security level of mobile application clients for Android and iOS is roughly the same.”

NASA’s Curiosity rover finds levels of gas on Mars that could suggest possibility of life

NASA’s Curiosity Rover has detected high levels of methane output during its mission on the Martian surface, the?New York Times reports. The discovery, found during a measurement taking on Wednesday by the robot and observed by NASA researchers, could indicate that microbial lifeforms may have taken up residence underground on Mars.

Methane is often present in higher concentrations in the air on Earth due to output from living creatures, which is why researchers are going to take a closer look and see if they can find any more corroborating evidence to back up the theory that the gas is due to output from subterranean Martian microbes. If all goes to plan, we should find out more about these follow-up observations as early as Monday, when researchers expect Curiosity to return the results of its new investigatory procedure.

Any measurable amount of methane detected by Curiosity would be a tripwire for?Mars??researchers, since the gas would likely have to have been produced recently by an organism if the reading is accurate, because otherwise it would’ve naturally broken down in a relatively short timespan into its component parts. That said, it’s worth noting that methane can be produced without any living organisms, and it could be gas long-buried and escaping to the surface through tiny cracks from underground reservoirs.

The NYT notes that this isn’t the first time researchers have detected traces of methane on Mars, but it is the highest concentration yet detected, and the Rover’s readings have been backed up by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, at least provisionally. Remember this isn’t the first time we’ve had potential evidence of life beyond Earth, but so far, nothing definitive has been discovered that indicates Earth isn’t unique in supporting living organisms.

Volkswagen's electric race car set another speed record. Can it do that again?

Volkwagen's electric race car took on one of the toughest courses in the world — and set a record.The VW ID.R with two electric motors took on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife 12.9-mile lap through Germany earlier this month and finished faster than any other all-electric vehicle had ever done: 6 minutes and 5 seconds.

That's an average speed of 128 miles mph and faster than the previous electric record by 40 seconds.

In 2018, the same ID.R vehicle set a record at Colorado's Pikes Peak course — an uphill climb that took 7 minutes and 57 seconds on the 12.42-mile course. The same French racing driver Romain Dumas was at the wheel in both races.

Up next for the ID.R and Dumas is the Goodwood Hillclimb in southern England. The sprint climb is only a mile long. The ID.R completed the sprint in 43.86 seconds, another record for electric race vehicles, in 2018.

The ID.R is part of VW's electric "family" of cars, which includes an electric dune buggy, minibus, SUV, hatchback, sedan, and others slated to arrive in the next few years.

iRobot is best known for its robots used in the home, and now it’s looking to?enter the classroom with a new acquisition. The company has announced that it has acquired Root Robotics, which sells a robot and platform that helps children learn how to code.

Root Robotics originated as a?research project at Harvard University a couple of years ago, and its?Robot?already looks considerably like a Roomba — it’s a small, circular device that uses two wheels to drive around on a flat surface. It’s accompanied by an app that teaches children how to program the robot to do a variety of tasks, like drawing (the robot has a hold to place a marker in), creating music or games, and more.

iRobot says that the acquisition will help it “diversify its educational robot product offerings, further demonstrating its commitment to make robotic technology more accessible to educators, students and parents.” In doing so, it’s joining the space occupied by other similar companies, like Wonder Workshop, which manufactures?Dash?and?Dot, and Learning Resource’s?Botley, all of which teach coding and programming through their own apps.

Presumably, as Root allows iRobot to enter the education marketplace, it’ll be able to utilize its existing platforms for future products. Root Robot is now for sale on iRobot’s website, and retails for $199 for an individual robot, while a 30-pack for classrooms goes for just under $6,000. The company also sells an academic app ($60), and a whiteboard surface ($30) for it to operate on.
